Change in Enforcement Expectations for Mild Steel Welding Fumes

In light of new scientific evidence from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, verifying links between welding fumes and cancer, make sure that you are protecting your workforce and meeting the new standards.

As an authorised Optrel supplier, General Welding offer the Optrel welding helmets with PAPR range, which meets the new HSE enforcement expectations in relation to the control of exposure to welding fumes.

With immediate effect, there is a strengthening of HSE’s enforcement expectation for all welding fumes, including mild steel welding (the Workplace Health Expert Committee has endorsed the reclassification of mild steel welding fumes as a human carcinogen), because general ventilation does not achieve the necessary control.

All businesses undertaking welding activities should ensure that effective engineering controls are provided and correctly used to control fumes, and where these controls are not adequate to control all fume exposure, adequate and suitable respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is also required to control the risk from the residual fumes.

The experts at General Welding Supplies can work with you to ensure that you have the industry’s best RPE equipment with the Optrel PAPR range.
